RENO, Nev. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team placed third out of 21 teams at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the Reno Events Center.
Jared Stricker (Sr. - High Bridge, Wis./Ashland) won the 174-pound title to highlight a strong day for the Blugolds out west.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stricker went 5-0 to capture the 174-pound crown. He won twice by fall, once by technical fall and twice by major decision. He defeated NCAA Division I wrestlers from the University of Wyoming in the semifinals and finals.
- Niall Schoenfelder (Sr. - Antioch, Ill.) finished in second place in the 184-pound bracket. He went 3-1 on the day, highlighted by a pin against second-seeded Jersey Robb of NCAA Division I Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals. He knocked off third-seeded Kyle Knudtson of Eastern Oregon in the semifinals before falling to an unattached wrestler in the finals by 7-2 decision.
- Zach Sato (Sr. - Oswego, Ill.) finished in third place at 149 pounds. He went 5-1 at the tournament, scoring a win over the No. 2 seed in the bracket by major decision in the second round. He won twice by fall, but dropped his semifinal match. He responded with a 16-14 victory over NCAA Division I Cal Poly's Gavin Fernandez in the third-place match.
- In all, the Blugolds had 15 wrestlers in action.
