McPhee, Singewald place 1st at Luther Open

DECORAH, Iowa — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team competed at the Luther College Open on Saturday. Zak McPhee (Fr. - Duluth, Minn./Proctor) and Calvin Singewald (Fr. - Cannon Falls, Minn.) both won individual titles to highlight the fourth-ranked Blugolds' performance at the tournament, which did not feature team scores.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Singewald was the 133-pound champion in the Silver Division, while McPhee won the 184-pound weight class in the Silver Division.
  • Singewald went 5-0 en route to the first title of his college career. He won twice by fall and once by technical fall. He clinched the title with a 2-0 decision over UW-La Crosse's Wyatt Magolski in the finals.
  • McPhee is now 2 for 2 in his college career, following up his title at the Yellowjacket Open with another at Luther. He went 4-0 to win the 184-pound title, taking his final three matches by bonus points. He won by pin in the quarterfinals and semifinals, and scored a 16-0 technical fall over Hawkeye CC's Isaiah Kellow in the finals.
  • In all, UW-Eau Claire had six placewinners, all in the Silver Division. Brady Brewick (Fr. - Kingston, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) took second at 165 pounds, posting a 3-1 record on the day. Ty Fink (Fr. - Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville) took fourth at 149 pounds with three wins in five matches. 
  • Brody Perry (Fr. - Edina, Minn.) placed sixth at 285 pounds. Tristan Drier (So. - Cadott, Wis.) took eighth at 165 pounds.
  • UW-Eau Claire had 20 wrestlers in action in total.

UP NEXT

The Blugolds begin their dual season with their home opener on Thursday, November 14 against UW-Oshkosh. They host the Titans for the Chancellor's Cup at 7 p.m. at the McPhee Center. The Blugolds have won the Chancellor's Cup in each of the last two seasons.

The team will also be hosting Team Night that night.
