Blugolds compete at loaded D3 Shootout

CHICAGO — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the D3 Shootout hosted by the University of Chicago on Friday and Saturday. The two-day meet was comprised almost exclusively of teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation. The Blugold women placed eighth of 10 teams, finishing only behind teams ranked No. 23 or better. The men placed 10th of 10 teams, with all but one of the other nine teams featuring in the latest top 25 rankings.

"Our kids competed great and many swam best times, which is not the norm for this time of the season with no taper," Head Coach Annie Ryder said.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Each team was allowed to bring its top eight men and top eight women swimmers, along with one diver for each team.
  • The Blugolds scored multiple top-five finishes, led by Kadin Denner (Sr. - Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) and Ben Keller (Sr. - Cedarburg, Wis.), who both took third in one event. Denner placed third in the men's 400-yard individual medley, while Keller took third in the men's 200-yard individual medley. Keller also placed fifth in the 200-yard butterfly.
  • Molly Hosack (Jr. - Cedarburg, Wis.) led the Blugold women with a pair of fourth-place finishes. She took fourth in both the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.
  • Blake Wallen (So. - Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) notched a pair of fourth-place finishes on the men's diving board. He was fourth in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions.
  • Ian Olson (Sr. - Chippewa Falls, Wis.) took fourth in the men's 100-yard breaststroke and placed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke.
  • Elaina Plonis (Sr. - Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) took fourth in the women's 200-yard butterfly.
  • The Blugold women finished with 440 team points, while the men tallied 432.
