PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team was knocked out of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament (Presented by Culver's) with a 2-1 defeat to UW-Platteville in the semifinals on Thursday at Pioneer Stadium. The third-seeded Blugolds rallied from an early deficit, but the second-seeded Pioneers struck later in the second half to deny UW-Eau Claire a spot in the conference championship game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers went in front after a 15th-minute goal. They found the back of the net off a set piece, heading home a corner kick.
- Haley Von Rentzell (Jr. - Chanhassen, Minn.) scored an equalizer for the Blugolds in the 52nd minute. A UW-Eau Claire cross from the left wing spilled loose off the goalkeepers' hands, and Von Rentzell was there to tuck it into the back of the net and tie the game.
- UW-Platteville took the lead for good in the 62nd minute, scoring from just inside the box.
- Bella Jones (So. - Neenah, Wis.) made three saves during 45 minutes in goal. Kennedy Boll (Sr. - Franklin, Wis.) made one save while playing the other 45 minutes.
- UW-Platteville held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Blugolds were playing in the WIAC Tournament semifinals for the fourth consecutive season.
UP NEXT
The Blugolds were eliminated from contention for the WIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the loss. The NCAA Tournament field is set to be unveiled on Monday, November 11.
