WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team stayed unbeaten with a 26-14 victory over UW-Whitewater on Wednesday at Kachel Gymnasium. The fourth-ranked Blugolds fell into an early deficit, but quickly settled the score as the action moved into the heavier weight classes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warhawks won the first three matches, but the Blugolds took six of the next seven to win the dual.
- Four Blugolds won with bonus points. Fifth-ranked Zach Sato (Sr. – Oswego, Ill.) won by 21-2 technical fall at 149 pounds. Preston Carlisle (Jr. – Cannon Falls, Minn.) won by 19-0 technical fall at 165. Top-ranked Niall Schoenfelder (Sr. – Antioch, Ill.) prevailed by 11-2 major decision at 184, and Ian Pepple (So. – Hastings, Minn.) had the only pin of the night at 197.
- Top-ranked Jared Stricker (Sr. – High Bridge, Wis./Ashland) and Sloan Welch (So. – Arpin, Wis./Auburndale) both picked up victories by decision, winning at 174 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively.
- The Blugolds improved to 2-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) duals and 6-0 overall. Wednesday was their fourth consecutive win over UW-Whitewater dating back to 2021.
