ROCHESTER, Minn. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team opened its 2024-25 season at the Yellowjacket Open hosted by Rochester Community and Technical College on Saturday.
Ian Pepple (So. - Hastings, Minn.) and
Zak McPhee (Fr. - Duluth, Minn./Proctor) both won titles as the fourth-ranked Blugolds got their campaign off to a solid start.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pepple was the 197-pound champion in the freshman/sophomore division, while McPhee won the 184-pound title. In all, the Blugolds had nine placewinners at the tournament.
- Pepple went 5-0, recording four wins via fall — including the first-place match. McPhee won all four of his matches, with three victories coming by fall to start his college career.
- Landon Church (So. - Jordan, Minn./Scott West) earned a third-place finish at 157 pounds. Three of his four wins were bonus-point victories.
- Travis Moelter (So. - River Falls, Wis.), Royce Butt (Fr. - DeWitt, Iowa/Central DeWitt) and Brody Perry (Fr. - Edina, Minn.) all earned fourth-place finishes. Moelter wrestled at 133 pounds, Butt at 141 and Perry at 285.
- Parker Kamm (Fr. - New Ulm, Minn./Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial) took fifth at 141 pounds. Ty Fink (Fr. - Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville) placed eighth at 149 pounds.
