ADRIAN, Mich. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team went 4-0 to clinch first place at the Adrian Duals on Sunday at Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. The fourth-ranked Blugolds knocked off one ranked opponent and two others that featured in their respective divisions' national polls to win the tournament title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blugolds (5-0) opened the day with a 41-9 victory over Cleary University, which received votes in the most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association NAIA national poll.
- UW-Eau Claire followed with a 38-8 victory over tournament host Adrian.
- The third dual of the day saw the Blugolds knock off Division II foe Seton Hill University. The Griffins received votes in the most recent NWCA national poll.
- UW-Eau Claire clinched the title with an 18-15 victory over 14th-ranked Ohio Northern University.
- Top-ranked Jared Stricker (Sr. - High Bridge, Wis./Ashland) went 4-0 on the day at 174 pounds, while fifth-ranked Zach Sato (Sr. - Oswego, Ill.) did the same at 149. Travis Moelter (So. - River Falls, Wis.) swept all four of his matches at 133 pounds.
- Stricker defeated the eighth-ranked wrestler in Division II by technical fall during the dual against Seton Hill. Sato tallied three pins and a technical fall on the day. Moelter had two major decisions and a pin.
