Box Score MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team picked up its first victory of the season with a 5-1 win over Augsburg on Saturday at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Leo Bacallao (Jr. - Madison, Wis./Memorial) scored a hat trick to help the Blugolds break the game open.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Eau Claire (1-2-1) scored twice late in the first period to open up a lead. Bacallao scored the opener with just under five minutes left in the period, assisted by Max Ruoho (Jr. - Madison, Wis./Memorial) and Cade Lemmer (Jr. - Tomahawk, Wis./Wausau West). Connor Szmul (Sr. - Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) doubled the lead just under four minutes later off assists from Carter Bradley (Fr. - St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) and Max Dronen (Fr. - Moorhead, Minn.).
- Jordan Randall (Sr. - Maple Grove, Minn.) made it 3-0 in favor of the Blugolds with a short-handed goal in the early stages of the third period. Tyler Herzberg (So. - Germantown, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) assisted.
- Augsburg scored a few minutes later, but Bacallao iced the game away with two more goals in the final 10 minutes. Lemmer assisted each, and Trenten Heyde (Jr. - Atlanta, Ga./Grayson) added an assist on the final goal.
- Max Gutjahr (Jr. - Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) made 24 saves in net to earn his first victory of the season.
- The Blugolds successfully killed three Auggie power plays.
