Six pins help wrestlers retain Chancellor's Cup

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team defeated UW-Oshkosh 54-0 on Thursday at the McPhee Center to win the Chancellor's Cup for the third consecutive season. The fourth-ranked Blugolds rode six pins to a straightforward victory over the Titans, giving them five wins in their last six meetings with UW-Oshkosh.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Every single Blugolds win was a bonus-point victory. That included a run of four straight pins late in the dual to clinch the win in the team's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener.
  • Izzy Balsiger (Jr. - Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Zach Sato (Sr. - Oswego, Ill.), Preston Carlisle (Jr. - Cannon Falls, Minn.), Jared Stricker (Sr. - High Bridge, Wis./Ashland), Niall Schoenfelder (Sr. - Antioch, Ill.) and Ian Pepple (So. - Hastings, Minn.) all won by fall. Stricker was the quickest to pin his opponent to the mat, finishing his 174-pound match in 34 seconds.
  • Travis Moelter (So. - River Falls, Wis.) and Colton Sund (Sr. - Prior Lake, Minn.) both won by technical fall at 133 pounds and 157 pounds, respectively.
  • Drew Kested (Jr. - Sterling, Ill.) and Brody Perry (Fr. - Edina, Minn.) both won by major decision at 141 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively.
  • Several Blugolds made their season debuts in the dual. That included reigning All-Americans Sato, Stricker and Schoenfelder. Sato is ranked No. 5 in Division III at 149 pounds, while Stricker and Schoenfelder are the top-ranked wrestlers at 174 and 184, respectively.
