Women's basketball defeated by 4th-ranked Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak snapped at the hands of No. 4 UW-Whitewater with a 66-37 defeat on Saturday at Kachel Gymnasium. It was the first loss in two weeks for the Blugolds, who fell behind early and couldn't recover against their highly ranked foe.

UW-Eau Claire (10-9, 4-4) got 15 points, eight rebounds and a career-best six blocks from Kylie Mogen (Sr. – Menomonie, Wis.). However, the Blugolds couldn't overcome 30 turnovers against the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) leaders.

The Warhawks (18-1, 7-1) used a lengthy run to build a lead in the first quarter. They outscored the Blugolds 15-2 over a span of four minutes, although UW-Eau Claire recovered to pull within eight by the end of the period at 18-10. The Blugolds held UW-Whitewater scoreless across the final four minutes of the opening period.

The second quarter followed a similar trend, with a 16-2 run propelling the Warhawks to a comfortable lead. They led 36-18 at halftime and continued to increase their lead across the third and fourth quarters. UW-Whitewater outscored the Blugolds 16-6 in the third quarter and 14-13 in the fourth.

UW-Whitewater held a 50-37 advantage in rebounds, boosted by 27 offensive boards. It helped give them an edge where the teams had similar success shooting the ball — the Warhawks shot 31% compared to 30% for UW-Eau Claire.

Violet Morren (Fr. – Hillsboro, Wis.) made her first career start and set new highs with six points and seven rebounds. She also blocked two shots.

The Blugolds will look to respond when they host UW-Platteville on Wednesday, January 31 at Zorn Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. and the team will be hosting Cancer Awareness Night.
