Men's Hockey Bounces Back with Shutout Win Over Rival Stout

Box Score

MENOMONIE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team had their shutout streak come to an end last weekend against UW-River Falls. They also saw their seven game winning streak come to an end in the second game of the series. Friday night, they started a new streak against UW-Stout with a 4-0 win in Menomonie.

The Blugolds (13-4-1, 2-2-1) scored early when Ross Andersen (Jr.-River Falls, Wis./River Falls) found the back of the net for his first goal of the night at 2:41. Patrick Moore (Fr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) assisted on the goal.

UW-Eau Claire added to the lead at 7:58 when Jon Waggoner (Sr.-Fairbanks, Alaska, Lathrop) scored a goal with helpers from Daniel Olszewski (Sr.-Janesville, Wis./Craig) and Jared Williams (Sr.-West Chicago, Ill./Bartlett) for the 2-0 lead.

At 4:12 of the second period, Andersen scored his second goal of the night, this time on an assist from Chris Heineman (Jr.-New Boston, Mich./Traverse City Central). It was a big game for Andersen, who for the first time in his career, was playing against his younger brother, Karl, a freshman for the Blue Devils (6-12-0, 2-3-0).

The Blugolds took a 3-0 lead into the third period, and at 6:04 of the final period, they put the game away, this time on a goal by Moore, which came on the power-play. David Donnellan (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Olszewski assisted on the goal.

There were plenty of penalty minutes to go around in the game, as the Blugods were whistled for nine infractions for 21 minutes, while the Blue Devils finished with eight penalties for 22 minutes. Many of the penalties were matched up though for both teams as the Blugolds finished just 1-for-3 on the power-play while the Blue Devils were 0-for-2.

<Tyler Green (So.-Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) made 23 saves to notch his fourth shutout of the season. The Blugolds finished with 32 shots, and UW-Stout made a goalie change after starter Corey Koop gave up three goals on just 14 shots.

The same two teams will meet again Saturday night back in Menomonie at the Dunn County Recreation Center. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
