Women's Basketball Rolls Over Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team defeated UW-Superior 72-48 in tonight's WIAC matchup at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

With the win, the Blugolds improve to 9-15 overall and 8-7 in conference play. Superior drops to 8-16 overall and 3-12 in the WIAC.

The game went back and forth for much of the first half until Eau Claire went ahead at the eight-minute mark. The Blugolds wouldn't relinquish the lead again, taking a 34-18 score into halftime and eventually winning by a margin of 24, tying for their second largest margin of victory on the season.

The Blugolds outshot the Yellowjackets 49.1 percent (26-for-53) to 30.2 percent (16-for-53) from the field. The team shot 36.4 percent (4-for-11) from behind the arc and 76.2 percent (16-for-21) from the free throw line.

Down low, the Blugolds had a good night, pulling down 46 rebounds, the second-most in a game this season, to Superior's 24. The Blugolds also had 26 points in the paint to Superior's 10.

Eau Claire had four scorers in double figures. Hannah Mesick (Jr.-Chatfield, Minn.) finished the night with her eighth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and snagging 12 rebounds. Sarah Bingea (Fr.-Delano, Minn.) added a career-high 18 points, while Laura Olson (So.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) put up 15 more. Ellen Plendl (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) recorded 11 points and nine rebounds on the night.

The team travels to Menomonie on Saturday for a matchup with UW-Stout. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. The game will be the Blugolds' final regular season contest and the WIAC Tournament will start next Tuesday.
