Box Score EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - After defeating the fourth-ranked St. Scholastica Saints last night, the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team tied UW-Superior 3-3 in overtime at Hobbs Ice Center tonight.
After a first period that saw one penalty and a total of 24 shots, the Yellowjackets kicked off the scoring on the night, 42 seconds into the second period, short-handed.
The Blugolds got right back into the game, with Jordan Singer (Fr.-Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) scoring a power-play goal for the Blugolds at 4:55 with the assists from Tyler Romasco (So.-Perry, Ohio) and Brant Marple (Sr.-Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) to even the score.
Bryce Wilcox (Fr.-Roschester, Minn./Century) earned the Blugolds the lead at 7:03 with assists from Joe Bluhm (Sr.-Red Wing, Minn.) and Marple.
Superior responded at 10:38 with a goal of their own, but Eau Claire ended the period with an even strength goal from Kurt Weston (Fr.-Roseau, Minn.) at 18:59 with assists from Marple and Bluhm.
The third period yielded a lone goal from the Yellowjackets with less than six minutes remaining, leading the Blugolds to their fourth overtime game of the season. While the Blugolds outshot Superior 2-0 in the overtime, the score remained the same and the Blugolds picked up their fourth tie of the year.
Tyler Brigl (Sr.-Eagan, Minn./Eastview) defended the net for the Blugolds tonight, playing all 65 minutes and adding 40 saves to his record. While the Yellowjackets had 43 shots on the net, the Blugolds finished with 35. The 43 shots given up were the second most this year.
The Blugolds were able to convert one of their four power plays, compared to Superior's inability to convert on any of their five attempts.
The Blugolds move to an 8-13-4 overall record and a 4-10-4 record in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. UW-Superior moves to 9-11-5 overall and 3-11-4 in the NCHA. The Blugolds hold a 33-70-6 all-time record against the Yellowjackets.
With the Blugold tie tonight and the UW-Stevens Point 4-0 win over UW-Stout, the Blugolds have earned a No. 6 seed in this year's NCHA playoffs. Eau Claire will head to UW-River Falls for a two-day series against the Falcons next Friday and Saturday in the NCHA Quarterfinals. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. both nights.
