Box Score EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team won big tonight at Zorn Arena, defeating UW-Superior 57-33.
Hannah Mesick (Jr.-Chatfield, Minn.) and Sarah Bingea (Fr.-Delano, Minn.) combined for 42 points while both recorded career-highs. Mesick led the game in scoring with 28 points, going 11-for-15 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the free throw line, and Bingea added 14. The two contributed 25 of the Blugolds' 29 points in the first half alone.
Mesick also led the Blugolds in rebounding with nine and Jodi Lindner (Sr.-Neillsville, Wis.) had a career-high eight assists.
The Blugolds, who improve to 5-10 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, never trailed the entire game. Superior got as close as one point in the first half but the Blugolds used an 11-0 run late in the half to get up by 15 points. The Blugolds held a double-digit lead the remainder of the night.
Eau Claire steadily continued to build its lead in the second half and reached its largest lead, 28 points, twice late in the half.
The Yellowjackets (6-8, 1-5 WIAC), who won their first conference game since the 2007-08 season last Saturday, had a tough time getting their offense going. They shot just 21.7 percent from the floor (10-for-46) and were 8-for-16 from the charity stripe (50 percent).
Eau Claire shot well, going 23-for-46 from the floor (50 percent) and 9-for-11 from the free throw line (81.8 percent). The Blugolds outrebounded the Yellowjackets 33-31 and Superior turned the ball over 21 times to the Blugolds' 19. It was the first time this season the Blugolds had fewer turnovers than their opponent.
Up next, the Blugolds will face UW-Whitewater at Zorn Arena. The game is set to tip off at 3 p.m. Saturday as game one of a doubleheader with the men.
