EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's golf team moved up six spots today to take sixth out of 14 teams at the 2009 Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invite at the Eau Claire Golf & Country Club.
The Blugolds' first team finished with 637 strokes overall with the second round's second best score of 316. For the second year in a row, St. John's University (Minn.) won the invite, finishing with 626 strokes while they totaled 607 a season ago. The University of St. Thomas (Minn.) finished second with 627 after shooting 314 today, and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) finished third with 628. UW-Stout took fourth and the Blugolds' second team finished fifth.
Individual medalist honors went to UW-Stout's Derek Holmes with 149 strokes (+7). Last year he tied for seventh after shooting 152.
Tim McCormick (Fr.-Madison, Wis./Memorial), who was tied for 42nd after round one, finished the 36-holes with 157 strokes and tied for 11th place out of 79 golfers.
Loren Churness (Jr.-Durand, Wis.) was the second finisher for the Blugolds' first team, tying for 24th overall with 159 strokes. Ben Ziemann (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) tied for 28th with 160 and Ryan Grip (Jr.-Wausau, Wis./East) finished with 161, tying for 34th. Alex Kroeger (Sr.-Onalaska, Wis.) completed the tournament tied for 63rd with 170 strokes.
Leading the Blugolds' second team was Jamie Krula (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chi-Hi). He led the entire field coming into today with 70 strokes, but finished the second round with 84 for a total of 154. He tied for fifth place overall.
The Blugolds will be back in action this Sunday and Monday when they compete in the Ronnie Eastman Invitational, hosted by Viterbo University, in La Crosse.
