Men's Hockey Ties UW-Stout 2-2

MENOMONIE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - After defeating UW-Stout last night 3-0, the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team recorded a 2-2 tie in overtime against the Blue Devils at Dunn County Ice Arena tonight.

The Blugolds (3-5-3, 1-2-3 NCHA) got down early against the Blue Devils (4-5-3, 2-3-3 NCHA) as Stout scored twice less than seven minutes into the game. Branden Gay kicked off scoring on a power-play for Stout at 2:53 in the first and Brandon Larson put the Blue Devils up by two with one at 6:55.

Eau Claire cut Stout's lead to just one after scoring with 26 seconds left in the first period. Nic Weight (So.-Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) picked up his third goal of the season while Brant Marple (Sr.-Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and Joe Bluhm (Sr.-Red Wing, Minn.) were credited with assists.

The teams came up with 17 shots combined in the second period but none found the net. In the third, Nicholas Kuqali (Sr.-Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) recorded his second goal of the season at 2:08 to even out the score at 2-2. Isaiah Bennis (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Nate Smith (Sr.-Clayton, Wis.) assisted on the goal.

The Blugolds had three shots in the overtime period while Stout had just one. Eau Claire finished with 39 shots on the night to Stout's 32.

Brandon Stephenson (Fr.-Saline, Mich.) played the entire game in the net and recorded 30 saves while allowing two goals. He is now 1-1-3 on the season.

Next weekend the Blugolds will be in Stevens Point for two games against UW-Stevens Point. Action will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
