Women's Basketball Escapes With Win To Stay Perfect

Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis. - In a low scoring affair, the third-ranked UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team escaped with yet another victory, this one coming against WIAC opponent UW-Superior, 48-43.

The Blugolds remain perfect on the season, moving to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Superior drops to 4-8 and is still looking for its first win in the WIAC, sitting at 0-4.

Eau Claire struggled from the field statistically, shooting just 28.6 percent in the first half and 34.5 percent in the second half. The Yellowjackets managed to shoot at a higher field goal percentage, but the Blugolds were still able to pull off the victory. Eau Claire out-rebounded Superior 38 to 25 and made 11 of 16 free throw attempts compared to Superior's four out of ten.

Throughout the first half, the lead changed hands on several occasions. Eau Claire got on the board first with a jumper from senior Heidi Arciszewski (Thorp, Wis.), followed by a Heather Witt (Sr.-Kendall, Wis./Royall) basket to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. Eau Claire would build a seven point lead five minutes into the game, but from that point on the Blugolds found themselves in a scoring drought. For the remainder of the half, Superior grabbed the lead and took a two point advantage into halftime.

Opening the second half, the Blugolds struggled to find their rhythm yet again. Superior kept the lead until a Hannah Mesick (So.-Chatfield, Minn.) jump shot tied the game at 34. The game would remain tied for a four minute span until the Blugolds regained the lead off of a Katie Weinberg (So.-Dresser, Wis./St. Croix Falls) jumper. The Yellowjackets didn't go away quietly, tying and taking the lead through the remainder of the half, but Eau Claire held onto the lead to sneak away with the five point win.

Witt led the Blugolds with a game-high 16 points, four assists and four steals. Mesick and Arciszewski were the other two Blugolds to reach double-digits, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. Arciszewski also led the team in rebounds with eight.

The Blugolds take their unblemished record on the road again Saturday, heading to fourth-ranked UW-Whitewater in another WIAC contest. The Warhawks are 12-1 on the season and 3-1 in WIAC play. In the last meeting between these two teams, Whitewater came away with a 60-50 win at Whitewater. Saturday's game is scheduled to being at 5 p.m.
