Box Score EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team came up with a big win over UW-Superior, defeating the Yellowjackets 70-43 at Zorn Arena tonight.
The Blugolds move to 16-2 overall and 8-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Superior remains winless in conference play this year, falling to 0-10 in the WIAC and 4-14 overall.
Eau Claire controlled the entire game tonight. After the Blugolds scored nine straight points to start the contest, Superior found the basket to make the score 9-3. But the Blugolds continued their dominance in the first half and allowed the Yellowjackets to score only 10 more points the rest of the way. Eau Claire also held Superior scoreless for almost a full eight minutes to end the half up 31-13.
The second half was more of the same as the Blugolds did not let up. Eau Claire continued to increase its lead and got up by as much as 34 points with just over seven minutes to go in the game. Eau Claire remained up by almost 30 the rest of the way and finished with a 27-point victory.
Eau Claire almost doubled Superior's shots from the floor, going 29-for-51 (56.9 percent) to the Yellowjackets' 15-for-52 (28.8 percent). The Blugolds also went 8-for-15 from beyond the arc while Superior went 3-for-26. Rebounding and turnovers were almost even with Superior finishing with 32 and 22, respectively, as Eau Claire had 33 boards and 20 turnovers.
Only two Blugolds reached double-figures tonight, but a total of 13 players put points on the board. Hannah Mesick (So.-Chatfield, Minn.) led the way with 13 points while Katie Weinberg (So.-Dresser, Wis./St. Croix Falls) finished with 11. Missy Fremstad (Sr.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) and Heidi Arciszewski (Sr.-Thorp, Wis.) each pulled down five rebounds to lead the team and Heather Witt (Sr.-Kendall, Wis./Royall) and Arciszewski both dished off seven assists to lead the game. Witt also led the game with five steals.
Bri Davis led the Yellowjackets with 11 points on the night and Anna Petersen added nine. Hailey Hart finished with seven rebounds to lead the game.
Eau Claire will be back in action this Saturday at Zorn Arena when second-ranked UW-Whitewater comes to town. Whitewater lost its second game of the season tonight, falling 62-53 at home to La Crosse, and the Warhawks and Blugolds are now tied for second place in the conference. Saturday's Tipoff will follow the conclusion of the men's game which is scheduled for 3 p.m.
