Men's Golf Takes Seventh At SJU Invite

SARTELL, Minn. - The UW-Eau Claire men's golf team opened its 2008 season with a seventh place finish at St. John's Fall Invitational at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course today.

St. John's led the 19-team field with a +9 round of 297. Bethel University (Minn.) finished second with 303 strokes, while the University of Manitoba took third with 305. The Blugolds finished the day with 311 strokes.

Alex Wieme of St. John's was the individual medalist, shooting a three-under-par round of 69. Manitoba's Eric Johnson finished second with 71 strokes.

Eau Claire was led by Ben Ziemann (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial), who tied for eighth overall with 75 strokes. Loren Churness (So.-Durand, Wis.) shot 78 to finish tied for 28th. Both Jake Brookshaw (Fr.-River Falls, Wis.) and K.R. Rucker {[(Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) finished tied for 36th with 79 strokes. Ryan Grip (So.-Wausau, Wis./East) completed Sunday's round with 80 strokes, tying for 45th overall.

The Blugolds will hold their annual Frank Wrigglesworth Tournament next weekend at the Eau Claire Country Club. The first round is scheduled for Sunday, while golfers will complete the tournament Monday.
