Mueggenborg Has Career Day Against Titans

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team had a big run late in the first half against UW-Oshkosh to take a 10 point lead into halftime. They would increase that lead in the second half to win the game 74-42.

The Blugolds are ranked 20th in the D3hoops.com poll and tonight they improved their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record to 11-1 and 17-4 overall. This loss drops the UW-Oshkosh Titans to 4-8 in the WIAC and 9-12 overall.

Rachel Mueggenborg (Sr.-West Salem, WI) came in late in the first half and put on a show. Oshkosh was leading by 2 at this point. Mueggenborg made a one three to get the lead, and then made another three to make the score 24-20 for the Blugolds. Heather Witt (Jr.-Kendall, WI/Royall) got a jumper and Mueggenborg made another three pointer to increase the lead to seven. Oshkosh's Whitney Tyriver had four straight points, but Mueggenborg answered with her fourth three pointer of the night. She also had the last basket for the Blugolds before half. The Blugolds would go into half with a 10 point lead, 36-26.

After a fire drill in Zorn Arena, the action started with Mueggenborg making a jumper in the paint. Heidi Arciszewski (Jr.-Thorp, WI) would have two baskets to increase the lead to 14. Mueggenborg would have her fifth three pointer of the night at the 13:06 mark. The lead would be 17 and the score was 49-32. With about 10 minutes left in the game, Mueggenborg scored eight straight points to put the Blugold lead to 23. The Blugolds finished the game out strong adding to their lead and getting some of the younger players playing time. At the buzzer the Blugold lead would be 32 and the score would be 74-42.

The Blugolds shot 52 percent from the field, 100 percent from the free throw line, and 50 percent from three point range. The Titans shot 32 percent from the field, 79 percent from the free throw line, and 30 percent from long distance. The Blugolds outrebounded the Titans 38-23 and had 13 offensive rebounds. The Blugolds had a staggering number of assists. They had 18 assists compared to Oshkosh's four. The big factor in the game was the Blugolds three point shooting. They shot 8-16 from long distance.

Mueggenborg had a career high 29 points and tied her own record of seven three pointers in a game. She shot 7-12 from long distance and also had five rebounds. Arciszewski had 12 points, four assists, and two steals. Michelle Burns (Sr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) had 11 points, and Witt had eight points and four assists. Oshkosh was lead by Tyriver's 11 points.

Next up for the Blugolds is UW-River Falls on Saturday at Zorn Arena. The game starts at 3 p.m. and everyone is recommended to wear pink to support the WBCA's Think Pink initiative against breast cancer.
