Women's Basketball Upends Yellowjackets

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team improved to 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with a 54-21 victory over UW-Superior in W.L. Zorn Arena tonight.

The 21 points scored by the Yellowjackets represents the lowest total they have ever scored against the Blugolds. The previous low was 23, which occurred twice, once during the 1973-74 season and again in 2000.

At the beginning of both periods, the Blugolds were able to hold the Yellowjackets scoreless for an extended length of time. The first period started with Eau Claire on 15-0 run and Superior not hitting a shot until 13:16. In the second period, Superior was held scoreless until 11:25, ending a 16-0 Blugold run that began at the end of the first period.

In the first, Eau Claire held Superior to only nine points with the Blugolds scoring 33. Eau Claire shot 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from the field while the Yellowjackets went 3-for-17 (17.6 percent). The Blugolds also outrebounded the Yellowjackets 22-10 in the first.

For the game, the Blugolds finished with a field goal percentage of 36.7 (22-for-60), shooting only 29.0 percent in the second period. Superior also shot worse in the second half, hitting on 13 percent of their shots, for a game total of 15 percent (6-for-40). The Yellowjackets were able to grab more boards in the second period, outrebounding Eau Claire 26-20.

Two players reached double figures for the Blugolds tonight. Rachel Mueggenborg (Sr.-West Salem, Wis.) led Eau Claire with 11 points while Heidi Arciszewski (Jr.-Thorp, Wis.) contributed 10. Hannah Mesick (Fr.-Chatfield, Minn.) added eight and also led the Blugolds with five rebounds. Heather Witt (Jr.-Kendall, Wis./Royal), who is leading the team in assists and steals this season, had a game-high three steals, while she and Amanda Zenner (Sr.-Medford, Wis.) tied with a game -leading three assists.

Leading Superior in scoring was Amanda Rounsville with five points. Chelsea Einerwold and Kelsey Thingvold each added four. Gigi Hudson, who came into tonight's game as the team's leading rebounder, had a game-high six boards.

The loss drops Superior to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in the WIAC. Eau Claire improves to 10-3 overall.

The Blugolds will be back in action this Saturday when they open a doubleheader in Zorn Arena against UW-Whitewater. The women will tip-off at 3 p.m. and the men's game will follow.
