Blugolds Roll Over Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team defeated the UW-Superior Yellowjackets tonight by a score of 79-40.

The win keeps the Blugolds undefeated at 10-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play and 16-3 overall. UW-Superior falls to 1-9 in WIAC play and 4-14 overall. The Blugolds are ranked 20th this week in the D3hoops.com poll.

The Blugolds built a lead early but extended it with 8:36 left in the first half. The Blugolds would have a Michelle Burns (Sr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) layup, a Hannah Mesick (Fr.-Chatfield, MN) jump shot, a Heidi Arciszewski (Jr.-Thorp, WI) layup, and another Mesick jumper. These four straight scoring possessions by the Blugolds would extend the lead to 13. Burns would go on a scoring run late in the first half scoring eight points in a minute and a half. The Blugolds would end the half with a pair of Ashley Anderson (Jr.-Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul) free throws to make the score 36-17.

The Blugolds would add to their lead in the second half. Arciszewski opened the half with four straight points to extend the lead to 23. Heather Witt (Jr.-Kendall, WI/Royall) had eight straight points right after Arciszewski. Witt scored on a three pointer, two layups, and one free throw. With 5:42 left in the game Burns would get two free throws to make the lead 29. Kali Houselog (Sr.-Neenah, WI/St. Mary Central) added a layup and Arciszewski chipped in a jumper to make the score 70-37. The Blugolds would get some scoring from their bench with two Ashley Hightower (Fr.-La Crosse, WI/Logan) free throws and two Pam Kaye (Milwaukee, WI/Brookfield Central) free throws. Jackie Hauser (Fr.-Whitehall, WI) added a jumper to end the game. At the end the score would be 79-40 for the Blugolds.

The Blugolds would shoot 48 percent from the floor, 30 percent from three point range, and 70 percent from the free throw line. The Yellowjackets would shoot 41 percent from the floor, 29 percent from three point land, and 75 percent from the line. The Blugolds outrebounded the Yellowjackets 28-22 and had four more offensive rebounds. The Blugolds forced 29 turnovers while only committing nine. The Blugold defense also created 15 steals.

Michelle Burns would lead all scorers with 18 points, and Heidi Arciszewski would have 15 points. Heather Witt had 12 points, 10 steals, and five assists. Rachel Mueggenborg (Sr.-West Salem, WI) was the last Blugold in double digit scoring with 10 points. Anna Petersen led the Yellowjackets with 10 points.

Next up for the Blugolds is UW-Whitewater on Saturday. Whitewater is right behind the Blugolds in WIAC Standings. The game starts at 3 p.m. in Whitewater.
