Box Score OSHKOSH, Wis. - Michelle Burns (Sr. -Eau Claire/North) set a season-high in points and propelled the UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team to a 62-54 victory over UW-Oshkosh today.
The Blugolds are still perfect in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) at 6-0 while holding a 12-3 overall record. They are ranked 25th in the latest USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Top 25 Poll. Oshkosh is 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
In the game, neither team scored a point for nearly two minutes until Oshkosh took a 2-0 lead with the first bucket. Eau Claire would tie the Titans a couple times early and go on a 9-0 run that made the score 11-4 at 15:05. Oshkosh replied with a 9-0 run of its own to go up 13-11 at 12:36.
The score would go back and forth for the next several minutes. Then the Titans retook the scoreboard with a 21-18 margin and then a 24-20 lead at 3:33. The Blugolds scored the last eight points of the half and led 28-24 at intermission.
The Titans barely held the edge in shooting 40.9 percent-to-40.7 percent. Eau Claire went 3-for-10 and Oshkosh shot 4-for-9 from long range.
It was Eau Claire's lead the entire second half and the closest Oshkosh got was right away when the Titans got within two. The Blugolds would increase the lead, scoring 18 of the first 25 in the second. The lead went to seven and then double-digits at 14:05 with a 42-31 lead. At 12:39, Eau Claire held its largest lead of the game at 15 with a 46-31 score after a Heidi Arciszewski (Jr.-Thorp) layup.
The Titans would get within nine and even seven at 5:51. However, the Blugolds kept the lead around 10 the rest of the game and won 62-54.
The second half saw the Blugolds go 50.0 percent from the floor while Oshkosh posted a 41.4 percent. The Titans also shot 13 threes, but put in just four.
Eau Claire shot better overall with 45.3 percent while the Titans hit 41.2 percent of shots. Oshkosh went 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) on threes while the visitors sank 4-of-16 (25.0 percent). The team came through at the line, going 10-for-12 as Oshkosh made 4-of-6. Both teams had 31 boards and Oshkosh gave up the ball four more times than their WIAC opponent. Eau Claire's 21 assists outpaced Oshkosh's 11.
Burns was the points leader with 24 points, the most for a Blugold this season. She stands on the brink of a milestone with 993 career points. Twelve Blugolds have achieved that mark before. Arciszewski and her 16 points were second-most today. Burns' seven rebounds were tops as well.
Whitney Tyriver and Erin Baganz each had 11 points to lead the Titans.
The Blugolds will next head to River Falls on Saturday to face the Falcons at 3 p.m.
