EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's golf team completed the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Collegiate Invite today at the Eau Claire Country Club, taking first place out of 15 teams.
The Blugolds ended the meet with 595, shooting 294 on the first day and 301 on the second. The Blugolds finished one stroke ahead of Gustavus Adolphus, who had the best day today with 298 strokes for an overall total of 596. Coming in third place was last year's NCAA Division III National Champions, St. John's, with 608 stokes. St. Thomas finished four strokes behind St. John's and rounding out the top five was UW-Stout with 627 strokes.
UW-Eau Claire's Peter Wendt (Sr.-Lake Mills) and Gustavus' Kyle Rohlfs were the top golfers at the invite, shooting a 144. Rohlfs had the best score today with 72 strokes, but Wendt's 69 on the first day and 75 on the second day helped him stay at the top. Rohlfs competed as an individual at the event, so his 144 was not counted toward Gustavus' team total.
Other Blugolds golfers competing on the winning Eau Claire team were Mason Milner (Sr.-Onalaska, Wis.) and Ben Zieman (So.-Eau Claire/Memorial), who finished tied for 10th with 150 strokes, Aaron Nelson (So.-River Falls, Wis.), who finished with 152 strokes in a tie for 15th and Derek Bauer (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan), who finished tied for 19th with 154 strokes.
The Blugolds also had a second team compete at the invite, the UW-Eau Claire Gold, and they finished 12th overall.
The Blugolds will be back in action next Saturday, Sunday and Monday when they travel to St. Peter, Minn. for the Gustavus Adolphus Twin Cities Classic.
