Women's Basketball Turns Deficit Into Big Win

PLATTEVILLE, Wisc. - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team turned a seven point deficit into an 18-0 run that lead them to defeating UW-Platteville 73-61 tonight at Bo Ryan Court.

In their last meeting, the Blugolds dominated the Pioneers into a 73-41 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament semifinal win. The Blugolds women are now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in WIAC play. The Pioneers drop to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in WIAC play.

The Blugolds got started with a jumper from Michelle Burns (Sr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) and Heidi Arciszewski (Jr.-Thorp, WI) tip-in. The Pioneers would answer with a layup and three pointer, but Burns and Arciszewski answered with layups. The Pioneers would go on a run with three layups and two foul shots. The Pioneers would lead by seven with 6:50 left to play in the first half. Burns and Arciszewski had back-to-back jumpers and Heather Witt (Jr.-Kendall, WI/Royall) chipped in a three.

The Blugolds would keep the scoring going with three layups, two from Burns and one from Witt. Burns would close the half with a three and jumper to make the Blugolds lead 34-25.

The Blugolds shot 57% from the field and 50% from three point range. The Pioneers would shoot 38% from the field, 27% from three point land, and 80% from the line.

The Pioneers came out of halftime with a Lisa Grantman three, but Heidi Arciszewski answered with a old fashioned three point play. Platteville's Vanessa Nemitz would make back-to-back three pointers, but Michelle Burns and Brittanni Hakanson (Jr.-Wheeler, WI/Boyceville) had layups to keep the Blugolds lead at five. Rachel Mueggenborg (Sr.-West Salem, WI) came in and added a three to make the score 46-36 for the Blugolds. Mueggenborg also added a three point play later in the half. Arciszewski and Kali Houselog (Sr.-Neenah, WI/St. Mary Central) added free throws to extend the lead to 14. The Blugolds were not done there. Mueggenborg and Missy Fremstad (Jr.-Osseo, WI/Osseo-Fairchild) added jumpers, along with layups from Arciszewski and Hakanson. Heather Witt would have two layups, followed by free throws from Fremstad. Arciszewski would close the half with a jumper to make the Blugolds lead 14. Platteville would add a layup with five seconds left to make the score 73-61.

The Blugolds shot 65% from the floor, 33% from three point range, and 89% from the line. The Pioneers shot 41% from the field and 83% from the line. They also attempted 15 threes, making five of them. The Blugolds had 28 rebounds compared to Platteville's 16. This game was filled with turnovers. The Blugolds had 24 and the Pioneers had 18.

The Blugolds were led by Michelle Burns' 21 points. Heidi Arciszewski had 18 points, five assists, and six rebounds. Heather Witt barely missed a triple-double. Witt had nine points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. The Pioneer's Lisa Grantman had 17 points, and Vanessa Nemitz had 16.Both player shot 19 threes together, making seven of them. Lisa Wubben had 10 points, four assists, and four steals.

UW-La Crosse is next for the Blugolds. The Eagles are 3-5 on the season, and have one loss in conference play. The action gets underway in La Crosse at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 8.
