Men's Hockey Shuts-Out St. Johns In Non-Conference Win

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team behind a shutout performance from goalie Tyler Brigl (So. - Eagan, MN) earned a non-conference win over St. John's University (MN) by a score of 1-0 at Hobbs Ice Center tonight.

Eau Claire leads the series between the two teams 9-5-0. The last time the Blugolds shutout the Jonnies was Jan. 27, 1993 when they won 4-0. The Blugolds move to 2-1-0 overall as St. Johns drops to 1-1-0 after a win last night over UW-Stevens Point 5-3.

This is the 20th time in school history that the men's hockey team has shutout an opponent. Last year's squad shutout Concordia College (MN) 9-0 and in 2003 the Blugolds shutout Milwaukee School of Engineering 9-0.

The only goal of the game came at the 11:09 mark in the second period from an Eau Claire power play where Bryan Plaszcz (So.- Apple Valley, MN) scored his first career goal as a Blugold off an assist from Dan Fina (Jr.- Fontana, WI/Glenbard South, IL). Fina has three assists on the season.

The action filled game saw 53 shots on goal between the two teams. St. John's had one more shot than Eau Claire in the game. The Johnnies had 27 shots and Eau Claire had 26.

Each team took five penalties in the game. The Jonnies were 0-5 on the power play and the Blugolds, Plaszcz converted on one of its five opportunities.

Brigl earned his second win of the season with 27 saves in the game. Brigl had nine saves in the first, eight in the second and 10 in the third period. Brigl has 84 saves on the season with a save percentage of .944.

The Blugolds will be on the road next weekend when they travel to Winona, MN to take on St. Mary's University on Friday night. On Saturday, Eau Claire will travel to St. Paul (MN) to take on St. Thomas University. The puck will drop both nights at 7 p.m.
