Blugold Soccer Clinches Third Straight WIAC Title

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team won its third straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular season championship today with a 6-0 victory over UW-River Falls.

The Blugolds, 7-0-1 in the WIAC and 15-1-2 overall, have not lost in 25 straight conference games. Including playoff games against conference opponents, the Blugolds have not lost in 30 consecutive games. The last time UW-Eau Claire lost against a conference opponent was October 16, 2004, when Stevens Point defeated the Blugolds 3-0.

Eau Claire also claimed the top seed for the WIAC Tournament. The Blugolds are two-time defending tournament champions and will host the eight seed UW-Platteville. Eau Claire beat Platteville during the regular season by a score of 7-0.

The Blugolds scored four of its six goals in the first half, the first goal coming at the 21:28 mark. Liz Kooistra (Jr.- Lakeville, MN) scored the first goal of the contest and her eight goal of the season.

Jamie Schiesel (Fr.- Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) scored her third and fourth goals of the season at the 35:50 mark and the 40:49 mark. Allison Smith (Jr.- Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson) had the assist on the first goal which came off a corner kick. The second goal by Schiesel was unassisted.

The fourth goal of the game came by Sam Krueger (So.- Elkhorn, WI) with the assist going to Ashley McEachern (Fr.- Hermantown, MN). This was Krueger's third goal of the season and McEachern's first assist of the season. The Blugolds had 10 shots and two corner kicks in the first half. UW-River Falls and one corner kick and not shots in the first half.

Amy Smith (Jr.- Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson) scored her 13th goal of the season and the fifth goal of the contest at the 49:01 mark in the second half. Kooistra and Haelee Maurer (Fr.- Appleton, WI/West) had the assists on the goal. Krueger added one more goal, her second of the game at the 75:17 mark. Sara Aschenbrener (So.- Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake) had the assist on the goal, her first of the season.

The Blugolds had nine shots and one corner kick on the second half. In total the Blugolds had 19 shots on net and three corner kicks. The Falcons had four shots on goal and zero corner kicks in the second half. In total the Falcons had four shots on net and one corner kick.

Liz Weirick (Sr.- Kenosha, WI/Tremper) was in net for the Blugolds in the first half. Wierick had no saves and faced no shots on net. Allie Rivard (Jr.- Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) took the net for the Blugolds in the second half. Rivard had two saves for the Blugolds.

Eau Claire received the top seed for the WIAC play-offs. The Blugolds will host UW-Platteville on Tuesday at the Bollinger Fields in Eau Claire. The game is set to start at 2 p.m. Tickets for Tuesday's contest can be purchased at the field; the cost will be $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for youths, and free for all WIAC students with ID.
