Women's Basketball Continues Dominance Over Superior

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team won its 39th straight meeting with UW-Superior tonight as it defeated the Yellowjackets by a final score of 72-43 at Zorn Arena.

The Blugolds improve to an overall record of 11-6 and a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record of 5-3. The Yellowjackets fall to an overall record of 7-9 and a conference record of 1-7.

Amanda Zenner (Jr.-Medford, WI) got the Blugolds on the board first with a jumper to make it 2-0. A couple of three-pointers by Superior gave the Yellowjackets an early 6-4 advantage. The Blugolds took the lead for good on a Rachel Mueggenborg (Jr.-West Salem, WI) layup that made the score 10-8 with 12:38 remaining in the first half.

The Blugolds then used a 7-0 run halfway through the first half to take a 19-10 lead with a little than seven minutes remaining in the half. Heidi Arciszewski (So.-Thorp, WI) had five of the seven points. The Blugolds took their biggest lead of the half with 3:24 to go after a Missy Fremstad (So.-Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) layup made the score 24-14. Superior cut it in half at the break as Eau Claire led 26-21 at halftime.

The Blugolds shot 38% in the half, while Superior shot 36%. The big story of the half was turnovers as the Yellowjackets had 14 and the Blugolds only had five. The Blugolds scored 17 points off of those Superior turnovers.

The Blugolds pulled away right out of the gate in the second half, using a 9-0 run to take a 35-21 lead. Heather Witt (So.-Kendall, WI/Royall) had a couple of fast break layups during that stretch. Superior only got as close as 12 points the rest of the way as the Blugolds shot 65% in the second half. Eau Claire took its biggest lead of the game of 29 with 3:18 remaining after a Heidi Arciszewski jumper. The final margin would also be 29 as the Blugolds won by a score of 72-43.

Eau Claire finished with a field goal percentage of 51%. The Yellowjackets finished at 35%. The Blugolds finished with 18 steals in the game, five of which coming from Heather Witt. Witt has combined for 10 steals in the last two contests. Eau Claire scored 33 points off of 32 Tellowjacket turnovers, while Superior scored just eight points off of 14 Blugold turnovers.

Michelle Burns (Jr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) led all scorers with 18 points for Eau Claire. Heidi Arciszewski was right behind her as she chipped in 15 points. Ashley Anderson (So.-Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul) and Amanda Zenner each had six rebounds apiece to lead the team. Katie Moench led Superior with 14 points.

The Blugolds will host UW-La Crosse on Saturday in the second game of a men and women's doubleheader at Zorn Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 5 p.m. following the men's game.
