EAU CLAIRE - Mike Greer (Sr. -Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake) leads all 80 golfers at the Frank Wrigglesworth Invite on the grounds of the Eau Claire Country Club while the UW-Eau Claire men's golf team is second out of 15 after the first round.
Greer fired a one-under-par score of 70 today on the 6,672-yard course. He shot 36 on the front nine and followed up with a 34 on the back end. The 34 tied for best back nine score of the day. Greer shot one-under on par 3s, one over on par 4s and leads the pack in birdies with five. St. John's Joe Schoolmeesters is one stroke behind him with an even 71.
Teammate Mason Milner (Jr.-Onalaska), who also shot 34 on the back end, lurks two strokes behind Greer at one-over. Milner leads in par 4s with a one-under score on such holes and is one behind the leaders in pars on the day with 14.
Meanwhile, Cody Peterson (So.-Chippewa Falls) fired a 76 to tie for 19th and Ben Ziemann (Fr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) tallied 78 strokes for a 31st place tie. Ziemann's 14 pars and Peterson's 13 both are near the top for the first round.
All the shots add up to 296 for Eau Claire, which is four behind St. John's count of 292. Gustavus Adolphus has 297 while Luther College and St. Thomas are tied for fourth with 305.
The UWEC-Gold team landed three members in the top 20. Ryan Brockhaus (Sr.-Mayville) scored 74 to tie for 10th while Rob Norris (Sr.-St. Paul, MN/Cretin-Derham Hall) and Emerson Wiedner (Fr.-West Bend/East) both collected 76s for 19th. Wiedner and Brockhaus sit two behind the leaders in pars with 13 apiece. The Gold team sits in eighth with 309. Last year the Gold team took second in the home event only behind the regular Eau Claire squad.
Tomorrow the Frank Wrigglesworth Invite wraps up at the Eau Claire Country Club.
