Box Score EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire soccer team extended its home winning streak to 11 games with a 1-0 double overtime victory over Concordia-Moorhead.
It was a defensive struggle with the Cobbers, especially in the second half and beyond. While Liz Weirick (Jr.-Kenosha/Tremper) was in the net the first 45 minutes, five shots were allowed on goal. After that only one made it to Allie Rivard (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata). The 17 Cobber fouls and 10 Blugold ones contributed to the defensive battle.
The offense came through in the 109th minute on its eighth shot on goal of the day. Maria Iaizzo (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) passed to Emily Meisinger (Sr.-Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy) who shot from right to left and ended the game. It was her first goal of the season.
Eau Claire came into the game ranked sixth in the nation and first in the region, according to the NSCAA/Adidas poll. Concordia-Moorhead was ranked sixth in the region and last year took second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) after losing the conference championship game. The Cobbers had 10 of those starters returning for the 2006 campaign.
The Blugolds now improve to 6-0-0 as Concordia-Moorhead drops to 4-2-1. Eau Claire has shut out its opponent five of the six games and has allowed a single goal all year, that being a penalty kick. It all adds up to one goal allowed in 559:18. The last time Eau Claire won a double overtime game was August 30th of 2002, though the team has been in double overtime ties and losses since then.
Eau Claire plays its second conference game Wednesday when it hosts UW-Stout at 4:00 p.m.
