Soccer Wins In First WIAC Competition

LA CROSSE - The sixth-ranked UW-Eau Claire soccer team won 2-0 over UW-La Crosse today in its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) game.

The Blugolds remain unbeaten at 5-0 and move up to 1-0 in the conference. The Eagles are now 2-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC after today.

The offense put up 21 shots with 13 on goal. Maria Iaizzo (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) led with five shots on goal and also assisted in the first goal of the game. Iaizzo and Sam Krueger (Fr.-Elkhorn) worked the ball to Amy Smith (So.-Bloomington, MN/Jefferson), who scored her third goal of the season which ties her with Iaizzo for most on the team. The 1-0 score came 9:55 into the first half.

Smith tallied an assist herself at the 74:50 mark in the second half when Allison Muer (So.-Minneapolis, MN/South) found the back of the net.

Liz Werick (Jr.-Kenosha/Tremper) stopped three shots while Allie Rivard (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) snuffed out two. The defense allowed 10 shots today and the goalies stopped all on goal. The team has shut out four of its five opponents this season.

The Blugolds heads to Bollinger Fields tomorrow for their home opener. The team faces some stiff competition from Concordia-Moorhead, ranked ninth in the regional. The Blugolds also have a 10-game winning streak at home on the line when they play tomorrow at noon.
