Soccer Pulls Away From Titans

EAU CLAIRE - Tied 2-2 entering the second half UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals and held UW-Oshkosh to just three shots on goal in the second half to defeat the Titans 4-2 here today at the Bollinger Fields.

The win improves the Blugolds' record to 12-1 and 6-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play while Titans fall to 5-4-2 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC. The Titans entered today's match tied for second place behind the Blugolds. The win marks the third straight victory over the Titans. The Blugolds hold a 17-3-1 all-time series advantage over the Titans.

The Blugolds have two matches remaining in conference play as they attempt to win their second consecutive WIAC regular season championship. The Blugolds travel to UW-Platteville October 14 and UW-River Falls on October 21.

Allison Muer (So.-Minneapolis, MN/South) scored the first goal of the day at 4:05 off an assist from Maria Iaizzo (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) to give the Blugolds an early 1-0 lead.

After the Titans tied the match at 1-1 on a Dana Gudel goal Iaizzo hit the back of the net at 22:44 assisted by Liz Kooistra (So.-Lakeville, MN) to give the Blugolds a 2-1 lead.

The Titans would fight back to tie the match at 2-2 on Gudel's second goal of the match.

Iaizzo would give the Blugolds the lead for good with her second goal of the game at 50:03 assisted by Jessica Millard (So.-Madison/La Follette) for a 3-2 lead.

Amy Smith (So.-Bloomington, MN/Jefferson) later added an insurance goal scoring a goal off a header assisted by Millard off a header to extend the lead to 4-2.

Liz Weirick (So.-Kenosha/Tremper) saved one shot in the first half coming off a penalty kick while Allie Rivard (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) tallied two saves in the second half.

The two Titan goals mark the first time this season that the Blugolds have allowed more than one goal in a match. The Blugolds outshot the Titans 15-8. The Titans were whistled for 13 fouls while the Blugolds were called for 10 fouls.

The Blugolds return to action tomorrow when they face Augsburg (MN), who is 7-2-2 and in second place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Action is set to begin at 2:00 PM.Eau Claire-Oshkosh Box Score
