Soccer Clinches Regular Season Conference Championship

Box Score

RIVER FALLS - The UW-Eau Claire soccer team posted its second consecutive outright regular season conference title today by defeating UW-River Falls 3-0 in its last conference matchup.

The No. 6 ranked team posted an unbeaten 8-0-0 mark in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) this year to take the second conference championship in team history. It is also 16-2-0 with two non-conference matches left to play. The Falcons are 5-2-0 in the WIAC and 9-4-2 overall.

The Blugolds are second all-time in terms of regular season championships. Stevens Point has 11 while River Falls and UW-La Crosse each has one.

The first half was quiet until the 33:46 mark when Maria Iaizzo (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) scored her team-high 13th goal. Anna Talbot (Jr.-Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) provided her first assist of the season. The Falcons were kept to two shots with Liz Weirick (Jr.-Kenosha/Tremper) not having to make a save on either one.

Liz Kooistra (So.-Lakeville, MN) made it 2-0 at 72:51 on an Emily Waldorf (Fr.-Hartford/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) pass. Just under 10 minutes later Emily Meisinger (Sr.-Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy) found net on a free kick to make it 3-0.

Eau Claire had 24 shots compared to the River Falls six. Allie Rivard (So.-Plymouoth, MN/Wayzata) made the two Blugold saves of the day while her counterpart Emily Stieler made six.

This was the team's 11th shutout victory of the year, one behind 1998's 12. It is now 14-5-1 against River Falls historically.

With all WIAC contests over, the Blugolds head to St. Thomas tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. match.
