Box Score DULUTH, MN - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team came close, but just missed its third win of the season as it fell 2-1 tonight to St. Scholastica in overtime.
The scoring began in the second period. The Saints' Matt Stengl notched an evenhanded score 6:38 into the second. Peter Bracker (Fr.-Albert Lea, MN) made it 1-1 less than seven minutes later on an even-strength goal of his own. It was unassisted.
The final strike came two minutes into overtime when Trevor Geiger made an even-sided shot to give the Saints the victory.
St. Scholastica put together 33 shots against Steffan Braunlich (Sr.-Los Angeles, CA/Loyola), two of which went through. They had 17 in the third and two in the extra period. Eau Claire managed one shot on goal in extra play to go with the 13 the Blugolds collected in regulation. The goalie stopped 13 of those 14 shots on goal.
It was a relatively clean game with only two penalties handed out, those being to Eau Claire.
The Blugolds now drop to 0-9-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and 2-16-3 overall. The Saints are 5-4-1 and 14-6-1 in the respective categories.
Eau Claire takes the ice next Friday when it faces St. Norbert in De Pere. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m.
