Soccer Gives La Crosse First Loss

Box Score

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire soccer team defeated their second conference opponent in back-to-back days defeating UW-La Crosse today 2-1 at the Bollinger fields.

After a scoreless first half, in which the Blugolds out shot the Eagles 10-2, the Blugolds got on the board first when Liz Kooistra (Fr.-Lakeville, MN) put the ball in the net seven minutes into the second half. Maria Iaizzo (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN.) and Allison Smith (Fr.-Bloomington, MN/Jefferson) assisted on the play.

Then just a minute later, in what looked like a replay of the first goal, Kooistra struck again giving the Blugolds a two-goal lead. Iaizzo assisted again on the goal.

The Eagles then bounced back with a goal by Amy Todd halfway through the second half. It was the first goal the Blugolds had given up this season. The streak ended at 453 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.

The Blugolds then shut down the Eagles the final 16 minutes to preserve the victory. Allie Rivard (Fr.-Wayzata, MN) had three key saves in that time span.

The win gave coach Sean Yengo is 100th career win. Yengo is in his ninth season as the Blugolds' soccer coach.

With the win, the Blugolds improve to a record of 4-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles fall to a record of 4-1 and a conference record of 1-1.

The Blugolds next match will be a non-conference match Wednesday against Gustavus Adolphus at the Bollinger Fields. The action is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
