WHITEWATER, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire track and field teams had a strong start to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships (presented by Culver's) on Friday, with the Blugold women finishing the day in first place and the men in second.
The women tallied 85.50 points on the day while UW-La Crosse is in second with 60.50. On the men's side, Eau Claire has 45.50 points while La Crosse leads the field with 83.50.
David Kornack (Sr. – Edgar, WI), who entered the meet with the top distance in the nation in the shot put, broke his own mark with a toss of 19.18m (62-11.25) to win the event by nine feet. Kornack also broke his own school record which he set a week ago at the UW-Oshkosh Invite.
The distance medley relay team of Alex Winn (Jr. – Kingston, WA), Kyle Groven (Jr. – Pine Island, MN), Will Ullrich (Fr. – Oconomowoc, WI) and Connor Dolan (So. – Nekoosa, WI/Assumption) took the top spot on the podium with a time of 10:22.05.
KJ Munn (Jr. – Bayport, MN/St. Croix Prep Academy) was third in the 400m with a time of 49.44 while Patrick Treacy (Sr. – Fall Creek, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and Kyler Lueck (Jr. – Germantown, WI/Wisconsin Lutheran) went two-three in the mile run, finishing in 4:10.27 and 4:11.43, respectively.
Erica Oawster (Sr. – Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial), who is currently ranked second in the nation in the shot put, tied her season high with a toss of 15.11m (47-8) to win the event.
The women's distance medley relay team of Rachel Hirsch (Jr. – Brookfield, WI/Central), Sasha Riley (Jr. – Fairmont, MN), Michelle Hirsch (Fr. – Brookfield, WI/Central) and Hannah Lamack (So. - Kewaunee, WI) took third place with a time of 12:40.53.
In the pole vault, Allison Weiker (Fr. – Roseville, WI) tied for second (3.56m, 11-08) while Tommie Brenner (Sr. – Reedsburg, WI) was third (3.56m, 11-08). Lexi Lefever (Fr. - Hudson, WI) also had a third place finish with a height of 5.47m (17-11.5) in the long jump.
