SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team started Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play Friday evening as they traveled to Superior, WI to take on the UW-Superior Yellowjackets.
In the first period, the Blugold powerplay would have their chances early and often. Adam Parsells (Jr. – Wausau, WI/West) would shake the special team's woes for Eau Claire off by scoring the game's first goal during the second powerplay of the night. Parsells would skate in from the point and release a wrist-shot from the top of the circles that would find the top corner past the Superior goalie.
With a two-period total of 42 penalty minutes, both teams were tested with 5-minute major powerplays halfway through the middle frame. After giving up a goal at even strength early in the second, the Blugolds would keep the pressure on and score on their own major powerplay opportunity to gain back their lead. Charles Weiand (So. – Rosemount, MN) would rifle a shot from the point and sneak it in five-hole for his second goal of the season.
The Yellowjackets would tie things just over halfway through the third after a Blugold miscue in the neutral zone. The scored would stay tied throughout the rest of the period sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Eau Claire held a majority of the zone time and the hard work paid off. Jake Bresser (Sr. – Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) would receive a stretch pass in the neutral zone and rocket the puck under the goalie's blocker to win the game.
Goaltender Zach Dyment (Jr.-Abbotsford, BC/Yale Secondary) stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced and increases his record to 4-0-1.
