Women's Tennis Players Earn WIAC Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire women's tennis players have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Selected this week were Renee Nelson (Fr.-Madison, Wis./La Follette) for singles and Taylor Heltne (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Katie Gillman (So.-Red Wing, Minn.) for doubles.

In two matches during the week, Nelson went 2-0 playing at No. 5 singles. On Oct. 7, she gave up just one game as she beat UW-Stevens Point's Allison Fortier 6-1, 6-0.  Against UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 8, she fell in the first set 6-3, but came back to pick up the match victory 6-1, 10-8.

Heltne and Gillman picked up two conference wins during the week at No. 1 doubles defeating their UW-Stevens Point's Taylor Weuve and Rachel Brown, 8-1, on Oct. 7, while beating their UW-Oshkosh's Emily Bostwick and Lauren Piotrowski, 8-3, on Oct. 8.  The pair improved to 4-0 in conference play and has won seven straight matches. For the season, they hold a 13-2 overall record.
