Men's Hockey Suffers Loss at St. Scholastica
Duluth, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The 15th-ranked UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team was unable to take advantage of the power play opportunities tonight and took a 2-1 loss to the St. Scholastica Saints.
After a defeat the night before on the Blugolds' turf, the Saints were not going to let that happen again at their home. The Saints took advantage of a power play opportunity that was made when Tyler Romasco (Sr.-Perry, Ohio/Perry) was called two minutes for hooking and scored the first goal of the night at 10:25. At 13:10, Blugold goaltender Brandon Stephenson (Jr.-Saline, Mich./Saline) came off the ice to leave an empty net in hopes of getting another man on the ice to help get an offensive rally going for the Blugolds. However, the Blugolds were not able to capitalize off of it and went into the period break down 0-1.
Returning from the period break reenergized, Andrew Wilcox (Sr.-Rochester Minn./Century) and Romasco got the puck passed off to Alex Olson (So.-Devils Lake, ND/Devils Lake) who was able to find the back of the net and tie the game up 1-1 at 1:45. With the game all tied up, things started to get a little intense and heated on the ice and Saints player Paul Marcoux was given a five minute major for checking from behind and then a 10 minute game misconduct. Unable to use the power play opportunity, the game stayed tied going into the third period.
The tight battle continued in the third period until Bryce Wilcox (Jr.-Rochester Minn./Century) was sent to the penalty box for interfering. Thirty five seconds later on the power play, the Saints Garet Chumley shot one in and broke the tie, 2-1. Again, goaltender Stephenson was pulled from goal to help with scoring chances at 18:43, but nothing would come of it. With six seconds left on the clock both Wilcox and Chumley would be given ten minute game misconducts and sent to the locker room early.
The Blugolds outshot the Saints 35-28 on the night, but the Saints were able to win on the power play opportunities. Eau Claire was 0-6 while St. Scholastica was 2-6 on power play goals-Opportunities.
Goaltender Stephenson got his second loss of the season which puts his record at 2-2. He gave up two goals and had 26 saves on the night.
The Blugolds will return home next weekend to the Hobbs Ice Center to take on the No. 3-ranked, according to the USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll as of November 7th, Green Knights of St. Norbert College. Game action will start at 7 p.m.
